Is caloric intake necessary for acute porphyria patients?

Nutrition Steps should be taken to ensure the patient has adequate nutrition.

In mild attacks this will be by the use of high calorie drinks or in severe cases by
the administration of intravenous dextrose, at least
400 grams of carbohydrate is required every 24 hours.

Why do many porphs get into trouble when dieting and trigger attacks?

People eliminate a lot of calories when they eliminate carbohydrates.

For example, you might eliminate not only the baked potato (200 calories) but
also two pats of butter (100 calories) on top of the potato--and this creates a
calorie deficit.

Do the types of carbohydrates make a difference in our blood sugar levels?

Does nutrition have anything to do with suddenly waking up in the middle of the
night?

Waking during the night often occurs do to a sudden drop in blood sugar.

Having a bedtime snack can often help with this.

Is it always necessary to have caloric intake?


Adequate calories are necessary and parenteral nutrition with carbohydrates
may be necessary.


Attacks may also require therapy for hypertension, pain and epileptic seizures.


Strict avoidance of all precipitating factors may not be necessary in the
asymptomatic phase however they may well trigger symptomology and a latent
patient may then become acute.

Should porphyria patients exercise regularly?

Is you are physically fit, your muscles readily store the sugar as glycogen with
the need of much less insulin.

Because of this, active people can handle high carb foods and lave less need
to worry about glycemic effect.

This is especially important for porphyria patients that are also diabetic.

The difference between sugars and starches comes in their nutritional value and
